Introduction to PP materials used in plastic molds

Today is March 5, 2020. Before the impact of the epidemic, many plastic mold factories in Dongguan should not be able to produce normally, but as the situation gradually improved, I believe that major enterprises can get on track. Come on in Wuhan and China, hope the epidemic will end soon. Today, I will introduce a material often used in plastic mold factories, and this material was discovered by some companies in Dongguan yesterday as a material for making masks. This material is the PP used in plastic molds. Material, also known as polypropylene.

Polypropylene (PP), as a thermoplastic polymer, began commercial production in 1957, and is the first of stereotactic polymers. Its historical significance is even more manifested in the fact that it has been the fastest growing major thermoplastic, with its total world output reaching 24 billion pounds in 1991. It has a wide range of applications in the field of thermoplastics, especially in fiber and filament, film extrusion, and injection molding.

Chemistry and properties, PP is a metal organic stereoregular catalyst (Ziegler-Natta type), which makes propylene monomer under controlled temperature and pressure conditions. Due to the different catalysts and polymerization processes used, the molecular structure of the resulting polymer has three different types of stereochemical structures, and the quantities are also different. These three structures refer to isotactic polymers, syndiotactic polymers, and random polymers. In isotactic polypropylene (the most common commercial form), the methyl groups are on the same side of the polymer backbone, and this structure can easily form a crystalline state. The crystallinity of the isotactic form gives it good resistance to solvents and heat. The catalyst technology used during the previous decade minimized the generation of non-isotactic isomers, eliminated the need to separate worthless random components, and simplified production steps.

Well, this material is environmentally friendly and can be used as a material for making masks. It is really one of the most popular materials now. I wish the epidemic as soon as possible.
